This review is the final story about a new line of affordable smartphones according to LG. Leon - the youngest and, accordingly, the cheapest model. It is clear that infinite compromises are peculiar to the budget device, but it is gratifying that the device with all this still received the spirit and functionality of not only the senior counterparts, but also the flagship of the company.

Grade is expected to be simple and not rich. There is a power supply unit, Micro USB cable and accompanying documentation. It is a pity, of course, that LG did not put in the package at least a bad, but still wired headset. Consumers who buy devices of this level will be frank, often not demanding on the sound quality. And getting a bonus in the form of headphones is always nice. Still, the device has support for memory cards for downloading music there, and, in addition, it is equipped with FM-radio, which does not work without connected headphones. In general, saved not where necessary.

Design

Unfortunately, the hero of this review is an exception to the whole range and does not have a truly curved screen, as we can see in Spirit or Magna . The front surface here is completely flat without any radius of curvature, which the manufacturer proudly speaks about in older devices.

Safety glass has a real, truly effective oleophobic coating.

According to my observations, protection of the screen from the accumulation of fingerprints and dust is implemented even better than in the older and more expensive Spirit . Real miracles!

Fingerprints are almost invisible on the glass.

Above the display is a front camera with a distance sensor. But there was no place to install the ambient light sensor. Instead, the function of switching the backlight to the minimum level at night, that is, according to the schedule, is implemented. You can live with this and even quite well.

Touch buttons are part of the interface.

The sides of the smartphone are empty, since all the physical buttons on the old-good tradition of the manufacturer made for the back.

Moreover, it is in Leon that the keys are part of the detachable cover, and in other devices they were located directly on the case. In other words, if you removed the back cover, the device can be turned off in the only way - by removing the battery.

The company's pride is a removable battery. Why do users of this functionality - I do not know, but in the LG are in a positive way. Under the battery are slots for installing Micro SIM-cards.

Each of the "simok" can connect to 3G networks, but at the same time they can not do that.

This is established programmatically in the settings either on the first or the second card. The only way.

The only way

The audio output is on the top of the device, and the universal Micro USB connector on the bottom. At each of the ends there is a microphone.

The size of the device is quite tiny. He is the smallest among his fellows and even, perhaps, among competitors. We look at the plate with dimensions below.

For me personally, the device is too small, both in size and on the screen. Has long been accustomed to a larger 5 - 5.5-inch devices. However, those who used, say the iPhone 4, will be pleasantly pleased with the increased screen areas.

Three color versions of the device are expectedly available on the market and all have rather romantic names: metallic black, silky white and radiant gold. Each of these variations look original, so that the use of high-profile name can be considered justified.

Display

The smartphone has an IPS-matrix with a diagonal of 4.5 inches and with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. The pixel density per square inch is a value of 218 points, which is enough for comfortable work. Separate pixels can be considered, of course, but in normal operation at a distance of 30-50 cm from the eyes everything looks clear and smooth.

I want to note that the screen sandwich is made using In-Cell Touch technology, that is, without an air gap between the glass and the LED panel. In fact, it seems that you touch directly to the icons and links of the interface, and not to the glass, which is often at a noticeable distance from the substrate of the LEDs.
Viewing angles are expectedly good. IPS (in-plane switching) at its best! What else can you say?

A little about the "brains" of the device. SoC Mediatek MT6582 (32 bit) is installed here. The processor is made on 28-nanometer technology and includes 4 cores Cortex-A7. This chip is quite old (released at the end of 2013) and comparable in performance to the Ndivia Tegra 3.

About the memory I would like to say separately. Only 4 GB are allocated for data storage, of which 2.43 GB is occupied by the system.

As a result, the user is available only 1.56 GB, and then, provided that if you delete the extra content in the form of pre-installed applications.

The RAM here is only 768 MB, this is enough on average for two open tabs in the browser and several applications running in the background.

The rest of the picture is as follows. NFC is not, the OTG protocol is not supported, and the front camera is generally with a VGA resolution - in general, there are all the charms of a real budget device in terms of additional technical features.

It is clear that, against the background of all this, one should not expect breakthrough performance from a smartphone. The interface of the proprietary shell does not slow down, since it is well optimized for built-in hardware, but the device still likes to think when launching applications and switching between them. Since there are no jams and any errors, even taking into account the slowness of the smartphone, it's still nice to use it than not.

The results of system tests are presented below.

The international modification of the LG Leon differs from that sold on the domestic market as follows. First, it supports LTE Cat 4 networks. Next comes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 processor with a clock speed of 1.2 GHz. Then the RAM for a whole 1 GB and 8 GB allocated for data storage. For some reason, in the overseas version the battery capacity slightly decreased to 1820 mAh. On this, perhaps, that's all.

A photo

The main camera here is represented by a 5-megapixel module, respectively, the output images are obtained in a resolution of 2560 x 1920 pixels. There is autofocus, which, in general, works correctly.

The quality of the final images can not but rejoice.

With enough daylight, the pictures are really good, and on the screen of the smartphone it looks just fine.

There are no fatal errors in the automatic determination of the exposure, there are practically no darkened places, or leaving in an incomprehensible colored fog, as is often the case in budget cameras. For the most part, all is well. With the flagships to compare the capabilities of the LG Leon in no case be impossible, but for his money, he takes off well.

The originals of the submitted photos can be hooked on this reference .

The only conditions where Leon showed himself, to put it mildly, not from the best side - this is a night shooting.

Photos are very blurry, with huge noises and so on. At night, shooting on a smartphone is not an option.

The device is capable of recording video clips at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at 30 fps. The quality of the video is not bad, but, of course, not the best. For non-artistic shooting, the possibilities of Leon will be quite enough. An example below.

Software shell

I would like to devote a few paragraphs to a proprietary software add-in. In this regard, the device is no different from its counterparts. Here is the same stylish, minimalistic and quite functional shell from LG.

The bottom bar with keys to control the system is configurable. You can change the background color from white to black and back, change touch buttons in places, add new ones or remove old ones - in general, everything can be customized.

It's great that the company is porting interesting features of older devices to younger ones. I am talking about the keyboard, which is amenable to detailed configuration. The key block can be built for yourself by changing the height, and, thereby, the size of the buttons, as well as adding additional characters, such as a comma or a question mark, depending on how often you use it.

As always, you can block the device not only with a password or a pattern key, but also with a special combination of several touches to different areas of the screen - Knock Code. The thing is very comfortable and is only present on “ski” smartphones.

There is a negative point. It is frankly annoying that the screen backlight time is constantly returning to the standard setting of 15 seconds.

It is more convenient for me that the screen does not go out for a minute, but after the device reaches a 15% charge level and at some other moment (it wasn’t possible to track it), everything returns to the original fifteen seconds. This behavior is observed on all products of the Korean company and personally it really strains me.

Battery life

The device is equipped with a removable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1900 mAh. “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs,” it was obviously this approach that the engineers were guided by when creating the LG Leon. Weak iron, then you need to install a weak battery. Ultimately, we have all the same, the standard operating time for a modern smartphone, be it a flagship or a simple dialer with Android on board. I mean one day with a sufficiently dense load.

Of course, the device is able to stay afloat for two days, and with a sparing mode of use (one and a half hours of screen operation) even more, but these are webs. Hope for something else is not necessary.

Why don't some manufacturer take and install a 4000 mAh battery into a weak smartphone hardware. That would be a real competitive advantage. It is clear that for this there are thousands of nuances, the main of which are the thickness of the final product, the internal layout of parts, and so on. To solve all these problems, you will have to create a device from scratch, and not on the basis of something that already existed before. Reconstruct details, conduct hundreds of tests, and the like. But work hard, damn it! People need long-lived budget decisions and they are ready to vote for it with their money!

You can complete the review with a review , mostly in a positive way. The example of the LG Leon shows that the company is betting on design and usability. Characteristics fade into the background and, you know what? This is not to say that this is a losing approach. Judge for yourself, because Apple manages to successfully sell their smartphones, even with iron inside, which objectively lags behind competitors. People do not need hundreds of megahertz and megapixels for the minimum or not so much money. It is important to have convenience and style.

LG Leon satisfies all such expectations. Yes, it is devoid of curved design, does not stand out due to battery life, is very thoughtful even when performing simple tasks, and yet it is made qualitatively. Often in the budget segment, manufacturers save on everything, including the emotional charge that the device carries. The result is something, after which a lasting impression remains: “This smartphone was made only because the board of directors decided to enter the segment of budget decisions. Moreover, it was necessary to do it as soon as possible. ” This approach, or rather, such results in the form of uninteresting, pass-through devices, often sins Samsung and smaller companies, such as Fly. Great that LG can not be attributed to this list.
